Fruits For Diabetics - Learn Which Fruits Diabetics Should Eat and How to Eat Them

Should Diabetics Eat Fruit?

This is a tricky question. On the one hand, most of the calories in fruit come from carbohydrates which of course is something diabetics have to watch very closely or their blood sugar may spike. Additionally, most fruits have a high glycemic index compared to low carb high protein foods. On the other hand, some fruits are extremely high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber if eaten in their unadulterated raw form. There is no question that fiber helps regulate blood sugar. Scientific studies are rapidly proving the powerful health benefits of antioxidants.

These include antioxidants that help regulate insulin and help our cells become more sensitive to insulin, i.e. they help reverse diabetes. They also include antioxidants that help fight off health complications that diabetics are more susceptible to including heart disease, premature aging, stroke, and cancer. The pectin found in apples has been shown to improve glucose metabolism. Early studies show grapefruit can also lower blood sugar.

My take on this is that most diabetics should eat fruit BUT they should be very prudent about how they go about it. The primary purpose of this article is to give those with diabetes (and those who love them) practical information they can use to make wise decisions about which fruits they eat and how to eat them.

One important caveat: From a strict botanical perspective, some foods which we call "vegetables" are technically fruits but I am not including a discussion of these in this article. I do want to mention that many of these "vegetable fruits" are superstars in the diabetic diet. For example, a medium-sized peeled cucumber which is technically a fruit has only 3 net carbs and an extremely low glycemic load of 1 plus they are chock full of nutrients and fiber.

What Are the Best Fruits For Diabetics?

The best fruits for diabetics, taking all important factors into consideration, are berries. Relative to other fruits, berries are low carb and have a low glycemic index (20 - 45 GI, usually on the lower end of this). They are also exceptionally high in fiber and antioxidants. Within the most common berries consumed in the US, raspberries and blackberries have less carb and a lower glycemic index than blueberries but you can adjust your serving size to compensate for this.

For example, a 100 gram serving (about 2/3 cup) of raspberries or blackberries has approximately 6 net carbs whereas the same volume of blueberries has 12 net carbs. So, if you"re keeping your carbs super low you may want to reduce your serving size of blueberries to 1/3 - 1/2 cup.

Diabetics Should Favor Fruits That Are Relatively Low Carb, Have a Relatively Low Glycemic Number, and Are Relatively High In Fiber

Besides berries which I"ve identified as the #1 choice overall, a small serving of apples (12-26 g/fruit), citrus (8-22 g/fruit), and stone fruits (1-19 g/fruit) a few times a week can be part of a healthy diet for most diabetics. These fruits have a relatively low glycemic index and relatively low carb per fruit. Stone fruits are fruits that have a single large pit (the "stone") in the middle with a sweet fleshy outer layer around it.

These include cherries (1 g/fruit), peaches (11-19 g/fruit), plums (7 g/fruit), apricots (3 g/fruit), and nectarines (12-13 g/fruit). For your easy reference, I"ve included the estimated range of net carbs in grams per fruit. If you"re on a really low carb diet (less than 30 carbs per day usually) or you are gaining unwanted weight, you may have to really curtail fruits.

It is interesting to note that stone fruits are all members of the genus Prunus which also includes almonds, a superstar in the diabetic diet, and that a peach pit looks a lot like an almond shell. The edible skins of fruits tend to be very high in fiber so be sure to eat your apple peels and that fuzzy peach skin!

Cantaloupe (aka ground melon), watermelon, and pineapple are examples of fruits that are very high in carb so you might want to eat them only occasionally.

Bananas Are Very Popular In the American Diet But...

Bananas are the most popular fruit in America, even surpassing apples and oranges. However, bananas have 17-31+ grams of carb and have an average glycemic index of 55 which can be much higher with a really ripe super sweet banana (the way I like "em). If you really miss banana, I recommend eating them only 1-2 times a week and eating only half a banana as a single serving. Plus, you can pick out small bananas when you shop to lower the carb.

Diabetics Should Avoid Fruit Juice and Dried Fruit

Even if you drink the unsweetened kind, fruit juice contains little to no fiber and is very high in sugar with a high glycemic index. Because of this, even a small amount of juice can play haywire with your blood sugar levels. Plus, when you drink juice, you miss out on many nutrients you"d have in the actual whole fruit. Dried fruit highly concentrates the sugar and should therefore definitely be avoided by diabetics.

Eat Fruit With Other Foods

This is a very important point so pay close attention. When diabetics eat foods that are higher in carbs and have a higher glycemic index such as fruits, they should always try to eat some protein and healthy fat along with it. The protein and fat balances out the effect of the carbohydrates in the fruit and you will get less of a spike in your blood sugar.

A really good combination seems to be eating fruit with nuts. You can also combine eating fruit with some low carb yogurt, cottage cheese, hard cheese, or eat your fruit as part of a full meal. I love eating a small bit of fruit as a dessert. Use common sense though. If your meal already has a significant number of other carbs (like grains), you may want to skip the fruit.

Try To Eat Fruit Earlier In the Day

It seems that for most diabetics fruit has less effect on their blood sugar levels if they eat it earlier in the day. So, try to eat your fruit as part of your breakfast or lunch. This is especially true if you are experiencing the "dawn phenomenon" where your early morning blood sugar readings are much higher than they were when you went to bed. In this case, you should definitely avoid eating fruit at night and see if that makes a difference.

Pay Attention To Your Whole Diet and Keep It In Balanced

Let"s say you go on a beautiful summer picnic and you splurge on some very sweet watermelon (yum!). To compensate, you may want to watch your carbs more carefully for the rest of the day and maybe eat a lower carb dinner. If you just have to have a banana with your breakfast (I suggest eating half of a small banana), try to eat a lower carb lunch and limit your other carbs at breakfast.

Pay Very Careful Attention To Serving Size

The phrase "eat in moderation" takes on new meaning for the diabetic. Food is medicine for the diabetic and can even reverse diabetes if you know what to eat and stick to it but it can also exacerbate the disease if you eat the wrong foods.

When it comes to eating carbohydrates, no matter how healthy food item is, serving size is the most important factor. Yes, fruits are healthy in many ways but if you are diabetic, it is crucial you do not over-indulge in fruit. Doing so bcould result in a huge spike in your blood sugar, and worse, if you over-indulge too often you could make your cells less receptive to insulin.

I know the natural tendency of most Americans is to pick out larger sized fruit, which is why cultivators select for it. However, a simple trick for diabetics who want to limit their carbs is to pick out smaller fruit. It is generally just as tasty as the bigger fruit. Let me give you a few examples to illustrate the carbs you can save by doing so. A six inch banana has 17 net carbs whereas a nine inch banana has 31 net carbs.

That"s a 14 carb difference! That"s very significant. Even if you eat just half a banana, that"s still a 7 carb difference. Try to pick out small bananas. A small tangerine is only 9 net carbs (clementines are only 8 net carbs) whereas a large tangerine is 14 net carbs. You may even want to pick tangerines over oranges because even a small orange is 16 net carbs which is more than the largest tangerine.

If you really want to limit your carbs, you may want to pick apricots and plums (3 and 7 net carbs respectively) over peaches and nectarines (11-19 net carbs). It"s hard to resist eating the entire peach and it"s awfully messy to slice and leave half (but possible). With cherries, you can simply count out the number of cherries by the number of carbs you can afford since they are 1 net carb per cherry. How convenient of them (smile).

Be Careful, You May Be Eating More Carbs Than You Think

I think many diabetics and low carb dieters grossly underestimate the net carbs in the fruit they eat. There are many reasons for this.

It is easy to be fooled when you look up the nutritional values of fruit. The value you get is probably an average value. The average may not be as big or as ripe as the fruit you are actually eating. The tests may have been conducted with a different species or variety that is more or less sweet or has more or less fiber than the fruit you are actually eating. There is a lot of variation between varieties in fruit and it can make a HUGE difference in the actual nutritional values.

Even if you are comparing the exact same variety/species, your fruit may have been grown in a different soil type. Bottom line, you need to take the nutrition values you find for fruit with a grain of salt and be very aware that the values can vary greatly - much more so than with other types of foods like meat and dairy.

Cultivators and food science geeks play with genetics of fruits in an effort to make us, the sugarophilic super size that please consumers that we are, happy. I"ve read that the sugar content in cantaloupe doubled between 1950 and 1999. The values for fruit in the USDA Food Database were recently updated because they were so underestimated because fruits have gotten so much bigger and sweeter.

When you pick out fruit, don"t you tend to pick out the ripest, sweetest, most tantalizing fruit you can find? I know I do. In general, as a fruit ripens its carb quantity goes up, especially if it ripens before it is picked. Have you ever heard anyone say, "That fruit was as sweet as candy?"

Know Your Own Body

There seems to be more variability in how diabetics respond to fruit than just about any other food type. For some diabetics, eating a whole apple seems to be just fine while with others eating just half an apple can send their blood sugar soaring through the roof. For this reason, you need to do some very careful testing to see how your body responds to fruit so you will know what quantities and which fruits you can eat without causing ill effects. You"ll want to keep the testing as simple as possible.

Measure out a certain quantity of fruit, perhaps a half cup or whole cup of a fruit you"d like to eat, and test your blood sugar just before you eat it and then again 1.5 hours after you eat it. Compare these readings to what happens when you eat a low carb high protein snack at the same time of day under as many of the same conditions as possible. You can try increasing or decreasing the amount the next day depending on the initial result and you can try other favorite fruits.

Keep in mind that many other factors such as other foods you eat around the same time, how much exercise you"ve recently gotten, how much sleep you had the night before, how stressed you are, what you do in that 1.5 hours between tests, etc, etc can all affect the results so you"ll want to test more than once to see how consistent your results are. If your blood sugar does spike after eating a reasonable portion of fruit,

I encourage you to re-test in a month or two if you adhere to a good and consistent low carb diabetic diet and make other healthy lifestyle changes during that time such as getting more exercise, sleeping more, and lowering stress. Once the body has had time to heal itself, i.e. once you"ve had time to reverse your diabetes, you will likely be less insulin resistant (this is what happened to me) and your body may be able to handle reasonable portions of fruit (and a few other carbs) without the spikes in blood sugar.

3 Easily Digestive Foods For Diabetics

Balancing the blood sugar level is most important for the diabetic. Imbalance in blood sugar can lead to multiple problems like blindness, loss of limbs and even death. However one good thing is that though diabetes cannot be completely cured, it can be controlled. Eating a rich and balanced diet can help treatment of diabetes immensely.

Food Selection

Diabetes control is not only dependent on the medicine intake but more on the food habits and use of food. Indigestion can create major hazards for the diabetic patients and rich food can be one of the major causes for indigestion. It is therefore extremely essential that a patient suffering from diabetes takes only such food that is easily digestible.

Food 1 - Favorable Carbohydrates

Some of the important foods that are easily digestible and also have nutritional values are beans, vegetables, fruits, and grains. Foods like oats, grapes, cereals, peaches, whole grains, apricots, legumes, oranges, apples, peas, lentils, dried beans, and leafy vegetables are very good for diabetic patient. While some of them are carbohydrates that are really supposed to be dispensed with for diabetic condition, these carbohydrates are good for the diabetic due to their complex formation.

These are rich in fiber and fibers are not digested in the body. Simply passing through the digestive system, these carbohydrates keeps the stomach filled up, reduce appetite, and reduce blood sugar and cholesterol. With fiber in the body, the total digestion process is considerably slowed down on turn slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates. Moreover these complex carbohydrates are rich in nutritional levels. On the other hand, simple carbohydrates burn out quickly causing the sugar level rise instantly.

Food 2 - Fish, Eggs, and Poultry Products

Like Carbohydrate, protein is very important source of nutrition and energy. It slows down the absorption of insulin in the body and thus prevents quick drops in blood sugar. Therefore it is very important for a patient taking sugar preventive medicines to eat some of these items on a regular basis to prevent the sudden drop in blood sugar level. Eggs, fish, and poultry products are better than red meat that immediately spikes blood sugar. Fish oil also prevents hardening of arteries that often occur in case of diabetics. Only precaution is to keep the protein level to 20-30% of the total calorie intake per day.

Food 3 - Essential Fats

While saturated fats and Trans fats are bad for diabetes, there are some essential fats that can give nourishment without harming the patient. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats provide slow digestion, lower cholesterol, and lower blood pressure without affecting the blood sugar level either way significantly. Corn, olive oil, avocado, corn oil, salmon, and almonds can provide such fats that are good instead of being injurious to health of the diabetes patient.

A New Strategy For Reversing Diabetes

Diabetics are deficient in a key hormone involved in regulating blood sugar levels. The hormone, called amylin, is normally secreted by the pancreas to help regulate the interaction between blood sugar, insulin, and glucagon.

It plays a critical role in minimizing blood sugar spikes after eating through three primary mechanisms. Mimicking the effects of amylin is a potential new strategy for reversing diabetes. The following nutritional strategies target amylin"s effects and may help to reverse diabetes:

Preventing Glucose Production

The liver makes glucose when energy supplies drop. Amylin normally inhibits glucose production after eating a meal. However, diabetics continue to make glucose because they lack amylin. This excess glucose production raises blood sugar levels.

The following suggestions may help to mimic amylin"s inhibitory effects on glucose production:

  1. Supplement with 5 grams of soluble fiber 10 to 20 minutes before eating a meal. A fiber shake made with beta-glucans and cocoa polyphenols (antioxidants) is a great combination for inhibiting glucose production by the liver.Beta-glucans are soluble fibers found in oat bran. They help to control sugar spikes by limiting carbohydrate absorption. The cocoa polyphenols enhance the blood sugar effects by preventing the digestion of the soluble fibers.

  2. Drink 1-2 ounces of apple cider vinegar 10-20 minutes after eating a meal. Apple cider vinegar has been shown to optimize carbohydrate metabolism, eliminating the need for the liver to make glucose. The exact mechanism is unknown.

Slow Digestion

The faster you digest carbohydrates, the greater the spike in blood sugar. Amylin slows down digestion and helps to control blood sugar levels. Diabetics, deficient in amylin, quickly digest carbohydrates and experience sharp spikes in blood sugar.

The following strategies may help to slow digestion and limit blood sugar spikes:
  1. Drink 3 large glasses of water or unsweetened tea throughout each meal. Drinking fluids when eating, decreases the gastric emptying rate (the rate at which the stomach passes food into the small intestines.

  2. Add 1-2 ounces of extra virgin olive oil to salads or whole grain breads with each meal. The healthy fats found in olive oil take longer to digest, mimicking amylin"s effects.

Suppress Hunger

Hunger is the result of a complex interaction between brain chemicals and intestinal hormones. It drives a food-seeking behavior in response to cellular energy demand. Hormones, like amylin and leptin, are supposed to inhibit hunger once the energy demand is met.

But an amylin deficiency promotes overeating and disrupts normal sugar metabolism. The result is devastating to diabetics as blood sugar rises and body fat accumulates. The following suggestions may help to suppress hunger:
  1. Eat complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs fill you up. Eat lots of whole grain, oat bran, and oat meal.

  2. Ease systemic inflammation. Inflammation interferes with chemical signals originating in the intestines that are supposed to inhibit hunger. Adding the spice turmeric to your diet and supplementing with fish oils can dramatically ease inflammation and stop hunger.

  3. Supplement with Irvingia gabonensis, a West African plant. A 2008 study showed an average weight loss of 28 pounds in 10 weeks with 300 mg/day of Irvingia. A preliminary publication in the journal Nutrition concluded that this West African plant could significantly inhibit hunger.

What You Need to Know

There"s a good chance that diabetics are deficient in amylin. This leaves you at risk for higher blood sugar and excessive body fat. Mimicking amylin"s effects is a new strategy for reversing diabetes.

Diabetic Diet - Get Your Blood Sugar Level Lower Rapidly - Part Two

A diabetic diet is the best way for many diabetics to help keep their blood sugar at a normal healthy level. If you consume too much sugar and continuously do this for a long time, you will soon develop many major health problems to your eyes, kidney, nerves and heart. So once a diabetic finds that their blood sugar level is way too high, they need to find natural ways to bring their blood sugar down to a better position.

One simple method is watching the food you eat. If at all possible, you need to eat low-glycolic foods. These foods are broken down and distributed throughout your body much slower thus keeping your sugar level from spiking too high. These foods consist of peas, fruits, peanuts, granola, and oatmeal. Hint: combine some oatmeal with a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon, mentioned in my previous article, and you will have a great meal that will keep your blood sugar very stable. Plus, it"s yummy.

Decaffeinated coffee is another great source. If you drink a cup of decaffeinated coffee along with a simple sugar item which is absorbed by the body at a fast rate, the coffee will act as a barrier and keep your blood sugar level stable. It does this because of a certain chemical with the plant that that helps your intestines to absorb the sugar at a slower pace. Regular coffee does not have this same effect.

Sit down, take a deep breath, relax, and lower your blood sugar level. Yes, relaxation can actually help lower the amount of sugar that is in your bloodstream. Stress, on the other hand, is a bad culprit that actually releases a chemical that causes our blood sugar to rise. So, try to avoid stress and seek to get some daily relaxation in into your schedule.

Garlic and onions not only keeps the vampires away, they also help keep your blood sugar level at a normal level. They do this because of a certain chemical that can be found within the garlic and onions. This chemical makes the pancreas produce more insulin to handle the extra sugar.

The most fun way to bring your sugar level down is to laugh. Some doctors in Japan conducted a test that proved laughing helps lower the sugar that is your bloodstream. They concluded their study informing us that there are certain chemicals the body releases which help lower your blood sugar significantly.

Diabetics have to closely watch their daily diet so they can keep their blood sugar level at a stable level, which is a constant battle. They need to seek out ways in which they can lower their blood sugar level to steer clear of major health problems. If you just integrate all these tips into your diabetic diet, you will soon find it is quite easy to keep your blood sugar level normal.

Type 2 Diabetes - The Top Ten Tips To Help Boost Your Insulin Sensitivity

Looking to improve your insulin sensitivity levels? If so, you need to pay attention to a few tips and tricks to help you get more from your nutrition plan and lifestyle. Insulin sensitivity is a key factor determining whether or not you are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, so it is not something to take lightly.

Let us look at ten steps you can take to help you improve the way your body handles the carbohydrates you eat...

1. Eat Less Sugar. This may seem like the obvious answer but the more sugar you eat, the worse your insulin sensitivity will become. Start focusing on doing whatever you can to eliminate simple sugars from your diet and it will make a huge difference.

2. Feast On Omega-3 Fatty Acids. It is also critical you are getting sufficient omega-3 fatty acids in your eating plan.. This healthy fat will go a long way towards catapulting your insulin sensitivity in the right direction.

Salmon and walnuts are perfect sources.

3. Strength Training Regularly. Hoist the heavy weights if you hope to see optimal results. Strength training will boost insulin sensitivity and also help to increase your resting metabolic rate. Win-win!

4. Try Interval Training. Interval training is another important form of exercise you will want to add to your exercise plan. A good session of intervals will help...

  • your body handle sugar better,

  • use up sugar in the blood stream, and

  • lead to an improved resting metabolic rate as well.

All ideal for those seeking weight control.

5. Consider Intermittent Fasting. If you are someone who often has to remember to eat, you might consider an intermittent fasting protocol. Even fasting for 12 hours a day (with 8 of those coming while you sleep), can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes or help you manage your symptoms better.

If you do have Type 2 diabetes, however, be sure to talk with your doctor beforehand. In some cases, fasting is not the best option.

6. Add Cinnamon To Your Meals. There is evidence cinnamon can be helpful in regulating blood sugar as cinnamon stimulates the production of glucose-burning enzymes and increases the effectiveness of insulin. So start sprinkling it on everything you can. Add it to...
  • oatmeal,

  • smoothies,

  • protein pancakes, and even

  • on top of yogurt.

7. Get To Sleep On Time. It is time to start prioritizing sleep. Getting enough shut-eye each night will be critical for fending off insulin resistance and therefore Type 2 diabetes.

8. Stress Less. Feeling stressed? Do as much as you can to control it. Stress will cause the release of cortisol in the bloodstream, which can then cause issues with how your body handles the sugar you are consuming.

Plus, stress sets you up for all kinds of health woes, so it is not something to be messing with.

9. Pair Protein With Every Carbohydrate Source. Whenever you eat a carb, make sure you eat a protein immediately beforehand. Keep this as your golden rule. It is a must you are not consuming carbs alone as protein influences your blood sugar response by slowing down its absorption.

10. Shed Excess Weight. Finally, take steps to shed excess weight. Remember any extra fat you are carrying around can make your body more resistant to insulin, so doing all you can to eliminate this fat is important.

There you have the top ten tips to help boost your insulin sensitivity. Are you missing out on any of these?

Use Herbal Remedies for Diabetes to Lower Blood Sugar Level

How many are diabetics patients, do you have think! May be answer will be no. If you don"t know, don"t be worries, I will tell you the figure. Now in world 6 out of 10 are diabetic patients. Most of them generally used Insulin vaccine to reduce the sugar level, but it is not the right solution for the long time. In many research it has been proved that Herbal medicine and supplements are superior to modern medicines. Indian Ayurveda believes in traditional herbal remedies for the diseases and has various types of plants and herbs that will provide long term benefits over diabetes.

In Ayurveda some of the well known household"s plants are mentioned like: Jamun (Blackberry), Nilabadari (Blueberries), Tulsi (Basil leaves), Aloe Vera, Karela (Bitter melon) to help diabetic"s patients. Blackberry and Blueberries will improved the blood circulation and reduce the blood sugar level. All these herbs enhance the body immunity and providing the easy insulin secretion, glucose oxidation process that helps to fight with the diabetes.

If we say about "Dadi maa ke Nuskhe" (Grand Mother"s advice) consumptions of garlic and onion in sufficient quantity reduce the LDL cholesterol and increase the HDL cholesterol and prevent heart disease, which is the major impact of diabetes.

A strict diet plan is needed to balance healthy blood sugar level. Limit intake of sugar in your diet. Avoid foods like sweets, candies, pastries, ice-creams and cakes as they contain very high amount of sugar. If you take tea or coffee 2 to 3 times a day, try to add sugar to as low as possible or better if you can avoid using sugar in your drinks.

Bitter melon, drumsticks and other bitter taste vegetables are considered good for diabetic patients. A half cup juice of bitter melon daily in the morning will help to check excess sugar in your blood.

There are many products and supplements available in the market promising to lower blood glucose level. The safest and the most effective way to lower and maintain healthy blood sugar is to take herbal supplements. These supplements are mainly made of herbs and natural ingredients having anti-diabetic properties.

One of the widely used and most trusted herbal supplements for diabetic patients is Diabkil capsule. Taking 1 to 2 capsules of Diabkil twice daily for 3 to 4 months will help to maintain your sugar level and prevent long term and short term complications of diabetes.

5 Tips to Control Blood Sugar Without Medicine

To control blood sugar means to establish control of your life- something that many diabetics have only done by regularly taking their medicine. But did you know that there are means and ways that you would be able to control your spiraling blood sugar without relying solely on your diabetes medication, such as your insulin. Let"s face it- for many decades now, research on diabetes has shown that there are certain incidences of diabetes that are harder and harder to regulate with the usual spectrum of treatments.

Because of this there is a need to lower blood sugar naturally- and there are plenty of methods that you can try to make this happen for you. Your diabetes sugar level is wholly dependent on the condition of your body (how healthy you are) and your diet (what you have been eating all these years). Often the diabetic that has not been informed completely would not be able to gauge the general status of his health, and he or she would not know how to alter his current diet. The following may be done to obtain normal blood glucose levels.

1. Exercise more- it is now more necessary to increase your physical activity, because if you don"t even your muscle tissues will begin to take damage if you don"t control your blood sugar. If you haven"t been exercising for most of your life then this would be a good time to begin.

2. Eat less saturated fats- it is true that you need a nutritive diet to get along- but the nutritive aspect fails if you are consuming way too many calories of saturated fat. The effort fails because you might suffer from complications of diabetes mellitus- the deadly ones always affect the heart.

3. Eat organic- the less junk food and processed foods you consume, the less likely you would be raising your blood sugar levels. Because of this basic fact, start enjoying organic food more- start cooking at home with your own recipes and watch your blood sugar go down.

4. No to soft drinks- soft drinks are one of the leading causes of diabetes since its inception, and it still is today. If you have been addicted to the stuff from birth, then now would be a good time to wean yourself off the harmful substance because soft drinks are packed with sugar with every gulp.

5. Yes to natural fruit juices- if you still want your small doses of sugar and yet you have decided not to drink soft drinks, why not try natural fruit juices instead? Try the King himself- the coconut. Coconut juice is sweet, easily chilled and quite refreshing. Try different recipes for cocktails and watch a room go wild with coconut juice. Or you can simply sip it cold while reading your favorite book or listening to your favorite composers. This is also safe for insulin dependent diabetics.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Diabetes - A Purely Natural Way to Control Sugar Levels

Diabetes has almost become an epidemic in today"s world. Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Whatever sugar we take is generally broken down into simple sugar called "glucose" in our body.

This glucose circulates within the blood and enter into the cells with the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone, made within the Beta-cells of Pancreas. Due to sedentary life style and genetic predisposition, the beta cells are not able to make enough insulin, which is a key for glucose to enter into the cells. The key is not there and the glucose keeps on circulating within the blood.

This is called Diabetes.

There are two main types. Type I & Type II .

There is another condition known as Pre-Diabetes.

There are two main types of full-blown diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are completely unable to produce insulin.

People with Type 2 diabetes can produce insulin, but their cells have become resistant to it. In either case, the glucose can"t move into the cells and blood glucose levels can become high. When these levels remain high for long time, they can cause serious complications.

Pre-Diabetes:

Pre-diabetes is a condition in which the cells in your body are becoming resistant to insulin or your pancreas is not producing as much insulin as required. Your blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes. This is also known as "impaired fasting glucose" or "impaired glucose tolerance". Every individual who has a Diabetic father or mother must go for glucose tolerance test or GTT. This can help in diagnosing pre-diabetic condition. A diagnosis of pre-diabetes is a warning sign that diabetes will develop later.

You can prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes by losing weight, making changes in your diet and exercising.

Type 1 Diabetes

In case of Type I (Insulin Dependent Diabetes) the person can"t make any insulin. Type 1 most often occurs before age 30, but may strike at any age. This is typically caused by genetic disorder. The pancreas produces very little or no insulin anymore. Frequent insulin injections are needed for Type 1. However there are certain herbs like Salacia oblonga and Pterocarpus marsupium which are found to be useful even in Type I diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

People suffering from Type II diabetes are having enough insulin but the cells have become resistant to it. This type of Diabetes has become very common and is spreading like an epidemic everywhere around the world. The most important reason for the cells to become resistant to insulin is sedentary life style which is being followed by modern age people.

95 percent of all diabetes cases are Type 2. What can be the reason? It"s a lifestyle disease, triggered by obesity, a lack of exercise, increased age and to some degree, genetic predisposition.

So the only way to prevent diabetes is to change the life style, which is the basic theory of Ayurveda to fight any disease. According to Ayurveda, Stress and life style is the reason for most of the illnesses including Type II diabetes.

Factors for developing Type II diabetes and herbs for them

As we know that there is no problem with the insulin production. It is there in the body in enough quantity, but the only problem is that it is not able to open the cells to make the glucose enter into them. All the glucose keep circulating within the blood. The cells become resistant to insulin. The reasons for Insulin resistance are -

1. Obesity

The number one risk factor for Type 2 diabetes is obesity. Nearly 40 % of the patients suffering from Type II diabetes are obese.

Excessive fat interferes with body"s ability to use insulin properly. According to Ayurveda this is called " Stroto-avarodh" i.e. blocked channels. This blockage in the channels of passage of Insulin is reason for greater insulin resistance.

Food and life style which cause blockage in the channels or " Stroto-avarodh " are curd, banana, heavy greasy diet, overeating, excess daytime sleep.

There are herbs which are useful in clearing the blockages and opening up the micro channels. These remove excessive fat from within the body. Herbs like Katuki (Picrorrhiza kurro), Vidang (Embelia ribes), Amalvetas (Garcinia cambogia), Triphala are useful in Type II diabetes because they open up the channels and helps in reducing the insulin resistance.

2. Sedentary Lifestyle

According to Charaka- an ancient Ayurvedic healer, lifestyle is damaging to health and bears responsibility for the growing obesity and diabetes. Inactivity and being overweight go hand in hand towards a diagnosis of Type 2. Muscle cells have more insulin receptors than fat cells, so a person can decrease insulin resistance by exercising. Sushruta another ancient Ayurveda surgeon explains by giving an analogy that who suffers from diabetes should walk at least 100 kilometers a day to keep his sugar level under control.

This indicates that one must walking and being more active also lowers blood sugar levels by helping insulin to be more effective.

3. Unhealthy Eating Habits

90% of people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. Unhealthy eating contributes largely to obesity. Too much fat, not enough fiber, and too many simple carbohydrates all contribute to a diagnosis of diabetes. Eating right is can turn the diagnosis around and reverse or prevent Type 2.

4. Family History and Genetics

It appears that people who have family members who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are at a greater risk for developing it themselves. Indians have a higher than normal rate of Type 2 diabetes. Having a genetic disposition towards Type 2 is not a guarantee of a diagnosis. Lifestyle plays an important part in determining who gets diabetes. So it can be prevented if we go for changed life style to avoid diabetes.

5. Increased Age

It"s a very sad but true fact. The older we get, the risk of Type 2 diabetes is increased. Even if an elderly person is thin, he/she still may be predisposed to getting diabetes. As we age, the pancreas ages right along with us. It doesn"t make enough insulin it did when we were younger. Also, as our cells age, they become more resistant to insulin as well.

6. Stress, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol

The hormones are under the control of our thought and our attitude towards events in life. The stress hormone immediately releases pool of glucose, corticosteroid hormones in our blood. There is immediate release of adrenal hormones, causing blood pressure and constriction of arteries.

Not only do they damage your heart vessels but they are two key components in Metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms including obesity, a high fat diet, and lack of exercise. Having metabolic syndrome increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

HERBS FOR DIABETES

It can be mixed with herbs described above.

8. Neem - Azadirachta indica

Azadirachtin, Nimbin and Nimbidin are effective alkaloids found in neem. They act not only as blood purifiers but also controls sugar level very effectively. Neem is also useful in many skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, rashes. The skin diseases associated with diabetes also respond to this herb quickly. It also helps in clearing away the blocked channels and maintains the flow of bile from within the liver and improves liver function.

9.Tulsi - Ocimum sanctum

It is popularly known as "The Holy Basil" is a sacred plant according to Hindu mythology. People in India worship this plant as it has tremendous medicinal properties. Regular use of leaves of this plant controls blood sugar levels very effectively. It is also useful in many types of cancers, viral and bacterial infections, sore throat, cough and cold etc.

10.Daruhaldi - Berberis aristata

This is a rhizome growing mainly in South India. The roots of this herb are taken out and grinded well. The herb powder stimulates pancreas to pump more insulin into blood. It also helps in preventing insulin resistance among cells. It acts as a channel opener for glucose into the cells. This also purifies the blood.

11.Haridra- Curcuma longa

This is very popular herb and is commonly called Turmeric. Turmeric powder is an effective anti-allergic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and one of the best natural anti-diabetic. It works in the same way as Berberis aristata. It helps in purifying the blood, channel opener, helps in reducing the insulin resistance and thus making the way for glucose into the cells.

12.Sadabahar- Vinca rosea

It is always flowering plant, growing almost in every house in India. It is known as periwinkle in English. The plant contains very precious alkaloids " vincristine" and "vinblastine" which are used in allopathic medicine as anti-cancer injections. The herb leaves are very useful in controlling the diabetes. The herb leaves are mixed with other herbs described above to get good results.

13. Amla - Emblica officinalis

Amla is world"s richest natural source of vitamin C and is nature"s super anti-oxidant. One amla contains 30 times more vitamin C than an orange. It prevents ageing and therefore delayes the onset of complications of diabetes. Amla powder, Amla juice can be consumed regularly to get the benefits in diabetes and other diseases.

Exercise and diabetes

One type of exercise you have likely heard about is fasted cardio training. The idea behind this training is you wake up and before eating anything (in the fasted state), you go on to perform some cardio training.

In theory, this is supposed to help amplify your total rate of fat burning because you won"t need to worry about having to burn off the calories from the food you just ate for breakfast. So your body can go right into burning the body fat stores it has. But, is this training best for people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes? Or would you be better off passing on it entirely?

Here are a few quick points for Type 2 diabetics to keep in mind...

1. The Intensity Level. The first thing to note is the level of your blood sugar. You will more than likely have to use a lower overall intensity level when doing fasted cardio as your blood sugar level will be below the best level for carrying out high-intensity training.

Now will not be the time to do those high-intensity interval sprints you normally do. Instead, you"ll be stuck doing steady state cardio training. If you don"t mind steady state exercise, this might be fine but for those who get bored quickly, it simply isn"t ideal.

2. The Question Of Blood Sugar. You know as a Type 2 diabetic taking medications to lower your blood sugar, it"s not wise for you to go hours without eating. In fact, you may already find on waking from your overnight fast your blood sugar levels are much lower than you would like them to be.

Now if you exercise, this will only amplify the effect. For many Type 2 diabetics, doing fasted state cardio training could potentially give them dangerously low blood sugar levels, rendering this type of training entirely impossible.

If you are going to attempt fasted cardio exercise, make sure you speak with your doctor before doing so. You will also need to monitor your blood sugar very carefully as you go about the exercise session.

So there you have the two main points to consider about fasted state cardio. All in all, the fat loss benefits of it aren"t even all that pronounced because the intensity of the cardio does come down. It will be just as beneficial to your body if you do an HIIT session later on in the day after you"ve taken in some food and have the energy to perform the most intense exercise.

Fruits For Diabetes Is a Good Concept - Know The Best Fruits

What fruits can diabetics eat? This is indeed an anxious question put by anyone prone to diabetes or pre-diabetes. But when you are suffering from diabetes, you may raise a reasonable doubt about the consumption of fruits for diabetes and the risk in it. It"s partly a genuine attitude to know the influencing factor in fruits helping to keep normal blood sugar levels. The American Diabetes Association emphasises that eating fruits loaded with vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber is good to keep off diabetes for healthy living. The prime key is to pay concern for portion sizes of what you consume to add energy to your body.

In this juncture, it is warned that fruits canned in syrups should not be considered to replace whole fruits. When you have concern for glycemic index (GI) for managing diabetes with ease, you should have the right choice of fruits with low glycemic index. You can just check your blood sugar by eating fresh or frozen low carb fruits. Hereunder you have the alphabetical A,B,C,D fruits described in order.

Apricots

Sweet but low carb apricots are indeed wonderful summer fruits that can be listed as the best fruits for diabetics. Adding apricots in diabetes meal plan is nice for the good reason that one apricot weighing 15 grams contains just 18 calories to revitalize body energy. Including four apricots can ensure one serving to provide you 70 percent of the vitamin needs for your body. Apricots are high in fiber source. You can relish a delicious salad by adding some cut pieces of apricots and cereal to hot or cold milk.

Berries

You have blueberries, strawberries, and other varieties in berries family. Irrespective of your taste, choosing berries to consume is good for the simple reason that they contain benefitting antioxidants helping the diabetics. The vitamins and fiber contents are of low carb nature. Regarding the calories, a small cup of blueberries can give 60 calories and 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Cherries

Cherries are friendly diabetic diet fruits a diabetic can eat without hesitation because they comprise low-carb components and have low glycemic index. They are sweet but just evolve 60 calories with 15 grams of carbohydrates. You have also bitter tasting cherries loaded with antioxidants helping to fight not only type 2 diabetes but also cancer and a few other diseases. Cherries are available in fresh pack canned, frozen, or even dried form. But it is better to avoid canned and dried form as they are packed with added sugar detrimental to diabetes. However, by checking the label about the amount of added sugar content you can have a nice purchase.

Durian

Durian is identified as the king of fruits. When it comes to diabetes, the choosing fruits low in glycemic index is the best. In this list, Durian is a better choice among fruits good for diabetics as the GI is 49 +/-5 whereas it is 55 +/-3 for watermelon. Sulphur helps to keep balanced blood sugar in the blood cells and nullify hypoglycemic effects. As such, the organosulphur components contained in Durian fruit stimulate antioxidant activities to maintain normal sugar levels in the blood cells. Also, sulphur ingredient reacts with thiamine and biotin to promote normal metabolism. In spite of all these, it will be safe a diabetic consumes durian in any form in moderation because of high nutritious values comprised in durian fruit.

A final say: Though "fruits for diabetes" is a good concept helping to maintain normal sugar levels, fruits low in sugar is best suggested. If at all you have cravings for consuming sweet fruits, no harm, you are safe if you are consuming one or two slices.

Normal blood glucose levels

So your readings are outside normal blood glucose levels. If you"re worried about complications, you can relax a little. They generally take 5-10 years to develop. Fortunately, diabetes research is progressing all the time. You have intense control over your blood glucose and the state of your health, as long as you stay on top o it

Here are some of the best cruel lessons about false impressions that can make it tougher to manage your diabetes.

First, do not do the "Borderline Hustle" .

If your fasting blood sugar has been 126 mg / dl, or your blood glucose after eating has been over 200 mg / dl at at least two occasions, you"re diabetic. Do not play with your health. You"re better off accepting your a diabetic. Its does not have the stigma it used to. In fact, people with diabetes who are monitoring and testing regularly are often healthier than their peers.

Use your readings as signals to take action. Start an exercise program or increase one you have in place. Lose some weight. You can prevent diabetes as long as you take action or decrease the damage it has done to you. In any case, you"ll be healthier and feel better.

Second, do not be lulled into a false sense of security.

Your symptoms may subside immediately after you start on medication. You"ll find there"s a "honeymoon" period of 30 to 180 days after diagnosis when your insulin needs decrease. (It can be longer when a child is older at the time of diagnosis.) Your symptoms may also let up.

Do not let down your guard, and do not stop measuring and tracking. It"s always temporary. You"ll want to know when the symptoms start to increase again.

Finally, match your symptoms, your glucose levels, and your lifestyle .

This is the crucial combination. You can not just show your meter to your physician. You could miss the dawn phenomenon, the effect of menstrual cycle, the timing of changes in blood sugar after exercise and other critical associations that will help you get on the right schedule.

Nopal can help normalize blood sugars

Many people have asked if the Nopal Cactus and Nopalea can help with blood sugar problems, so here is some information to help.

We know from personal experience in our local Black Hills TriVita Team that those who have had different stages of diabetes and blood sugar issues who follow our directions have had great results with Nopalea.

Nopalea seems to help regulate blood sugars without the negative side effects and liver damage, which is known to be one of the primary side effects of blood sugar prescriptions.

Safety note: Do not halt prescription drug use except under the direct supervision of a naturopathic or physician.

Conventional medicine companies do not want the public to learn about nopal and nopalea because it would cost many of millions of dollars in annual profits for diabetes drug sales. The public is intentionally kept ignorant about natural treatments for diabetes as a way to maximize corporate profits.

Most doctors have never heard of nopal, nopalea nor its blood sugar balancing effects. We suggest continuing all prescribed medicines and let your doctor notice the difference and makes changes.

The use of the nopal cactus goes way back into history as a plant used by the natives cultures for treatment of various maladies. The uses of the nopal cactus to lower blood sugar levels has been well documented by many private studies. Nopal cactus parts have been used in traditional south western medicine techniques for ages, specifically treating type two diabetes. The researchers were using the broiled nopal stems and their results showed a significant drop in blood sugar levels.

In recent private studies the Nopal Cactus Fruit from the Sonoran Desert have what is believed to be the the most powerful active ingredient. These ingredients are amazing anti oxidants called betalains. While betalains are found in limited numbers in other food sources such as beets and swiss chard, only a specific member of the Nopal Cactus contain all 24 betalains.

The prickly pear cactus which is known as nopal in Mexico used to make Nopalea has been proven to give good results in these areas also. A professor of nutrition at Andrews University, Winston F. Craig, Ph.D., wrote an article titled "Cactus prickly pear helps normalize blood sugar"

It is an informative article, in this article Professor Craig states

"In Mexican traditional medicine, prickly pear cactus (nopal) is used for the treatment of diabetes and high cholesterol. The blood sugar-lowering action of nopal has been documented in a number of studies."

Professor Craig also states"Prickly pear cactus appears to be safe when consumed as food. When used medicinally to lower blood sugar levels, it has proven itself to be trustworthy and effective for individuals with diabetes..."

In fact the specific Nopal Cactus fruit used in Nopalea has the highest concentration of betalains in any food substance tested and it is this specific fruit that is formulated into the drink Nopalea.

If regulating your blood sugars has been a problem, I suggest trying this all natural fruit juice concentration and experience wellness with so many others.

Method to reverse diabetes

Many people don"t know, but diabetes is a general term for a group of 3 metabolic disorders in which the blood glucose is bigger than 110 mg/dl. Generally speaking, there are 3 types of diabetes:

1) Type 1, which occurs when the body simply can not produce enough insulin to decrease the blood sugars;

2) Type 2 (the most popular type of diabetes mellitus), which occurs due to the body"s "ability" of developing insulin resistance. Overweight people tend to develop this disease, as obesity is a huge factor risk for this condition;

3) Type 3, also called gestational diabetes. It occurs only in women, only during the pregnancy;

Of all these forms, type 1 and type 3 can not be reverted. On the other hand, the type 2, also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, can be reverted. It takes some sacrifice, however, as drastic lifestyle changes need to be done.

To understand how diabetes can be reverted it"s important to understand what causes this disease. As said above, the primary risk factor is obesity and sedentariness. Some people are genetically predisposed to developing this disease at some point in their lives, but even so, it"s possible to postpone it for a good period of time.

Basically, whenever we eat carbohydrates with a high glycemic index, a large quantity of glucose is released into our system. As a consequence, the pancreas secretes insulin, which decreases the blood sugar. However, insulin decreases the glucose by facilitating its entrance in the cell. Whenever this is not possible anymore, the lipogenesis is triggered. In other words, this is how the fat tissue is created. The higher percentage of body fat, the more difficult it will be for the body to decrease the blood sugars.

Proven Method To Revert Diabetes

One of the best methods to revert diabetes is to try to decrease the blood sugars naturally. This can only be done by changing the dietary habits. For instance, instead of eating carbohydrates, people can try to eat fats instead. The ketogenic diet, based primarily on fats and proteins, is the best way to revert diabetes and loose a huge amount of fat tissue in a relatively short period of time.

What is the ketogenic diet and why does it work?

The main reason why the ketogenic diet works is the fact that it changes the body"s primary energy source from glucose to ketone bodies and monoglycerides. As a consequence, most of the people starting this diet will drastically decrease the water retention in their bodies. As a general rule, up to 22 lbs are lost in the first month of dieting. There are people who had lost more than 80 lbs in approximately 6 months using this diet, without using hormones, steroids or performance enhancement substances.

Although it sounds plain and simple, there are several rules that need to be respected:

1) In order to lose weight, people must permanently be in a state known as ketosis (which occurs whenever the number of ketone bodies is bigger than the existent quantity of glucose). As well, the number of calories per day should be restrained to 1500-2000

2) Carbohydrates are limited at no more than 20-30 grams per day. High GI carbohydrates should be avoided; instead, foods rich in fibers (as the vegetables with large leaves, for example) should be used

3) Consuming fats is encouraged. That"s because our body needs energy from a source. As well, if a diet contains only proteins, the liver will transform the monoglycerides and the amino-acids in glucose through gluconeogenesis, which may lead to exiting ketosis. This has to be avoided at all costs, even if it means eating low quality fats (like the ones from sausages and other processed types of meat). Fats should be taken from meat, olive oil, palm oils, cheese and so on. Although many people avoid eating pork, in terms of dieting, it"s one of the best types or meat, as it is rich in proteins, but also in fats as well. Take any nutritional table and choose the foods that don"t contain or contain at most 5 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams.

4) Eating proteins is also encouraged. We need proteins in order to survive, therefore eating lots of meat and cheese (careful, though, as certain types of cheese can contain hidden carbohydrates is recommended.

5) In order to accelerate the weight loss, implicitly the reversion of the diabetes, people should also start exercising. It doesn"t take to be an athlete to start burning some calories, as this can be done with baby steps. Jog in a low pace, walk or hike. It will help the body burn more fat tissue, but it will also help the body reduce the blood glucose.

6) Supplements like l-carnitine and most of the fat burners are benefic. L-carnitine will take the decomposed fat tissue and will transport it inside the cells, in the mitochondria, to be more specific. The mitochondria will use the new resources in order to create energy by synthesizing ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the main energy currency used by the body. In simpler words, l-carnitine (in dosages that can go up to 5000 mg a day) helps the body transform the fat tissue back into energy. Fat burners are helpful as well as they increase the body temperature, which in turn increases the metabolism.

7) It is important for people dink as much water as possible. Eating that much protein can lower the body"s PH. In order to not develop acidosis, people should drink at least 4-5 liters of water per day. Water has a slightly basic pH (generally speaking, it"s about 7,5), that can prevent acidosis and digestive problems from appearing.

Should diabetics eat bagels?

Should bagels be added to the list of foods diabetics should avoid? Isn"t it bad enough to ban birthday cake and chocolate cream pie?

For many, bagels have long been considered a healthy food choice. Surely the chewy goodness is better for you than pasty white bread. But what if you learned it was worse?

Both bagels and white bread are made of flour, water, and a few other ingredients. The white flour in standard bagels is the same as that in white bread. Nowadays nearly everyone knows white bread is bad for diabetics. It raises blood glucose levels as quickly as table sugar.

So how could a bagel be worse than bread?

A single slice of white bread provides 60-80 calories in the form of carbohydrates. Two slices of toast or bread for a sandwich amounts to about 150 calories. But what about a bagel? A mini-bagel also provides about 150 calories, but a regular-size bagel has 250-300 calories, whereas one of the yummy over-size varieties can be as much as 500 calories! That"s how a bagel can be worse than bread. It"s unlikely you"d sit down and eat 7-8 slices of bread, but that"s exactly what you"re doing if you indulge in a large bagel.

All bagels are not created equal in other nutritional regards. For example, a whole wheat bagel may have about the same calories as a french toast bagel (250 to 300 calories), yet contain only a third as much sugar but three times the fiber. Whole grains take longer for the body to digest and therefore do not elevate the blood sugar as quickly. Dietary fiber improves bowel function and promotes a feeling of satiety (fullness after eating). A bagel loaded with melted cheese will be higher in fat than a blueberry or raisin bagel.

And what about toppings? Two tablespoons of reduced-fat cream cheese adds another 70 calories, not a bad choice for a light breakfast or lunch. However, two tablespoons of peanut butter (or butter, or mayonnaise-based spread) amounts to an additional 200 calories, most of which comes from fat. A better choice would be an equal serving of sugar-free preserves (as little as 10 calories per tablespoon) or a few slices of lean turkey breast (about 50 calories).

People like bagels largely due to the texture. It feels like you"re eating more when you have to chew more vigorously. That"s not a bad thing, especially for diabetics who feel deprived much of the time.

While it"s true a diabetic should avoid eating a giant bagel slathered with peanut butter (a 700 calorie feast), a whole-wheat mini-bagel with low-fat cream cheese provides less than half that many calories and is fair game for the famished female diabetic craving a carbohydrate fix.

Evitar la resistencia a la insulina y controlar la diabetes - Naturalmente

Insulin resistance is when the cell (particularly liver, muscle and fat cells, with the liver losing sensitivity first, then the muscle and then the fat cells) loses its responsiveness on the insulin receptor site. Your body adds more and more insulin to store fat. Overtime, the pancreas give up leading to type II diabetes.

In type II diabetes, your body isn"t making enough insulin and/or the cells are resistant to insulin causing too much sugar to remain in the blood.

Insulin is necessary for your body"s use of sugar. Sugar is the basic fuel for your cells in the body, and insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells.

A fasting blood glucose level higher than 100-125 mg/dL is not indicative of diabetes, but it can be indicative of insulin resistance, and is above normal levels. Optimum serum glucose range is 80-95. Fasting serum insulin levels should be below 10.

Controlling your insulin levels with diet/nutrition, lifestyle modifications, exercise and supplements are a powerful anti-aging strategy and a must for health, vitality, longevity and fat loss.

Insulin Resistance Symptoms and Conditions:

  • Brain fogginess and inability to focus
    • Elevated triglycerides. Optimum range: 70-110 mg/dL. (40 to 60% of total cholesterol). This can only be determined with a fasting test. Triglycerides are a component of fat stored in the tissue. Decreased HDL with elevated triglycerides is a more significant indicator of risk to heart disease than total cholesterol over 200 mg/dL. Triglycerides are often increased with dysinsulinism (Syndrome-X/Metabolic Syndrome), alcoholism (GGT/GGTP also generally increased) and diabetes.

    • Excess fat around your midsection or scapula area

    • Hypertension

    • Intestinal bloating

    • Low HDL levels. Optimum range: Males - above 55 mg/dL. Females - above 60 mg/dL. Should be > than 25% of total cholesterol. Most effective way to > HDL is > exercise.

    • Sleepiness and fatigue

    • Type II diabetes

When glucose (sugar) builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause problems:
  • Higher risk of Alzheimer"s disease (in diabetes, hyperinsulinemia doubles your risk for AD compared to people without diabetes).

  • Obesity

  • Over time, high blood glucose levels damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.

ALL hormones work in synergy with one another. The hormone you have the most control over is insulin. This is regulated by your diet.

What Causes Insulin Resistance and Diabetes?
  • A sedentary lifestyle

  • Calorie restriction, skipping meals, diet pills and a crap diet of fast foods, boxed, canned or microwaved foods. Unbalanced meals, high in carbohydrates, sugar and a low intake of fats and protein.

  • Drinking soft drinks and fruit juices.

  • Elevated lypogenic (fat storing) enzymes and decreased lypolytic (fat burning) enzymes

  • Lack of quality sleep

  • Stress and altered hormonal levels. Years of high adrenaline and/or cortisol levels due to poor nutrition and lifestyle habits.

DIET AND NUTRITION for insulin resistance/type II diabetes:
  • Allowed fruits in moderation include: tomatoes, avocados, berries, grapefruit, lemons, limes

  • Avoid agave syrup,, HFCS, Nutra Sweet and Aspartame products as they may trigger diabetes and obesity.

  • Cut carbohydrates and increase protein. Eat a diet of organic proteins, non-starchy vegetables and fats (fats slow down the insulin spike)

  • Eliminate all boxed, canned and microwavable foods.

  • Eliminate all refined carbohydrates, grains, dairy products, fast-acting sugars (fruit juices, soft drinks, high glycemic fruits and starchy vegetables), hydrogenated fats, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco).

  • Lemon and lime juice reduce the insulin index of the meal due to the flavonoids.

  • If it does not run around in the field, swim, fly or is not green - do not eat it!

  • Small mini meals 5-7x daily. Include smart fats and protein at each meal.

  • Sweeten with stevia, an herb, instead of sugar. Stevia will not elevate blood sugars.

SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRIENTS for insulin resistance/type II diabetes:
  • Vitamin D - Bio D Mulsion Forte

  • Chromium

  • R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (lowers glucose levels up to 30%)

  • Omega-3 Fish oil with 400 I.U. mixed tocopherols

  • Bio-Glycozyme Forte (use with hypoglycemia)

  • Fiber

  • GlucoBalance (use with elevated triglycerides and " blood sugar)

  • ADHS (consider with increased glucose or triglycerides, adrenal cortical hyperfuntion.

  • Research and clinical feed back indicates that 7 Keto-DHEA is often effective in helping to ameliorate increased glucose levels. In addition, the 7-keto DHEA will not convert androgens to estrogens.

  • Resveratrol

  • Silymarin, an antioxidant that can improve liver function (especially the insulin resistant-liver cells) and blood sugar levels, have shown great promise in the effort to fully restore insulin sensitivity.

  • Zinc, magnesium and potassium deficiencies lead to insulin resistance.

  • Improves insulin sensitivity: CoQ 10, L-Carnitine, Taurine, L-Arginine, Glutathione

SUPPLEMENTAL BOTANICALS for Insulin Resistance/Diabetes:

Fenugreek/Flax seed Potion for diabetes and insulin resistance:

Take on an empty stomach first thing in the AM

1 T. freshly ground fenugreek seeds

1 T. freshly ground flax seeds

1 T. Liquid chlorophyll

16 ounces water
  • Gymnema Sylvestre before meals helps repair the pancreas and damage to liver and kidneys. Studies show that it may be able to help repair damage that has been done to the pancreas, as well as reduce the amount of insulin many diabetics need to maintain normal blood sugar levels. There is also research showing that it can reduce triglyceride levels and aid in weight loss.

  • Bitter Gourd

  • Banaba Tree Extract

  • Grape Seed Extract

  • Cinnamon - add to coffee with organic heavy cream to make you more insulin sensitive. Coffee has polyphenols which protect you from diabetes.

  • Tea: Green tea, Pau d" arco, Astragalus, Burdock, Fenugreek

LIFESTYLE protocol for insulin resistance/type II diabetes:

  • Ensure healthy gut flora. Consider a CDSA (comprehensive digestive stool analysis).

  • Get to bed by 10pm and get up no earlier than 6am. Lack of sleep disturbs lipid profile, glucose metabolism, androgen production and blood pressure, immune system and memory.

  • Glucose levels are influenced by carbohydrate intake, stress, glandular and liver function. Serum Glucose: Optimum range - 80-95 mg/dL. 105 and > = adrenal issues

  • Monitor blood glucose levels at least 2 times a day and before eating meals. If you are exercising you will need to test your glucose levels more frequently.

  • Obtain fasting serum glucose and insulin levels.

  • Rule out food allergies with increased or decreased blood sugar.

  • Rule out heavy metal burdens, pesticides, other xenobiotics and inoculations. These can be locus to pancreatic dysfunction resulting in diabetes or hypoglycemia.

  • Take Care of Your Eyes - Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness. It can lead to Retinopathy and other eye problems such as cataracts.

EXERCISE protocol for insulin resistance/type II diabetes:
  • Begin some form of exercise routine. Walking is excellent for diabetes. A daily 3mph brisk walk decreases diabetes risk by 50%!

  • Strength training is far superior to steady state aerobic exercise to prevent obesity and improve insulin resistance. Steady state aerobic exercise "cortisol levels which "insulin levels.

  • The power of being active should never be underestimated: from a short five minute walk to forty-five minute strength training sessions, it all counts towards reducing and eliminating the pre-diabetes (insulin resistance) syndrome.

Type 2 Diabetes - Can Diabetics Be Great Athletes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disorder associated with a family history of diabetes, obesity and even a lack of exercise. For many years Type 2 diabetes has been typically linked to myths, ideas and misconceptions that individuals suffering from this form of diabetes are always fat and lazy due to their inactive lifestyle. In contrast, reviews show anyone can develop Type 2 diabetes... even lean, active individuals. This way of thinking has many people wondering whether Type 2 diabetics can be great athletes.

Research has shown they can! Diabetes sufferers only need to:

  • make firm choices,

  • be proactive, and

  • maintain a positive attitude towards their health status.

This way they are able to lead normal lives like the other athletes who do not suffer from Type 2 diabetes. It doesn"t matter the kind of athletics they engage in, as long as they are exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

To prove this, many of the top athletes in the world suffer from chronic Type 2 diabetes. Have a look at this list:
  • Serena Williams... a woman who is known to dominate in women"s tennis.

  • Lionel Messi... one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

  • Sidney Crosby... a world-class hockey player.

  • Steve Redgrave... won his fifth consecutive gold medal in the 2000 Olympics.

  • Adam Morrison... an NBA star who plays for the Charlotte Bobcats.

  • Gary Hall... Olympic gold medal winner in swimming.

  • Kendall Simmons... offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

These individuals have made the choice that diabetes is not going to control their lives... these athletes took up the challenge and decided they were going to control their lives and their diabetes. They know the condition can be kept at bay as long as they are willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

The key to managing the disease is to control what is being placed in the body for energy and how effectively that energy is being used. Food choices are the first half of this equation since this is where most people get tripped up. The leaner the body, the more effective it is at burning available calories. The more excess weight the body carries, the harder it is for the body to fight to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

As athletes can tell you, exercise is the other important factor in managing Type 2 diabetes. While athletes may be well conditioned to endure strenuous levels of activity, any individual no matter what their level of fitness, can start out with low-impact exercise to build strength and trim their body fat. Athletes aren"t born in superb shape, each has to start at the beginning.

Type 2 Diabetes - What Do These Blood Sugar Levels Mean?

Firstly everyone has blood sugar levels but we"re really not that interested in them until we are told our levels are high and we have pre-diabetes or maybe even type 2 diabetes.  Then all of a sudden our lives seem to run around this process.

Glucose is the sugar that has the leading role in our body providing instant energy so that our muscles move and essential chemical reactions can take place.  It is one the three sources of energy in our body: the others are protein and fat.

In an individual without diabetes, very little glucose is actually maintained in the body and body fluids.  A fasting blood sugar test would reveal a result between 4 to 5.5 mg/dl (70 to 100 mmol/l).  Without fasting, normal blood sugar levels would be between 4 to 8 mg/dl (70 to 140 mmol/l).

The standard definition of diabetes mellitus is excessive glucose in the blood and is diagnosed using any one of the following:

1.  Random plasma glucose greater than or equal to 198 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) accompanied by the symptoms of diabetes

2.  Fasting plasma glucose greater than or equal to 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/l) and is usually carried out after fasting for eight hours overnight.

3.  Blood glucose of greater than or equal to 198 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) when tested after swallowing 75 grams of oral glucose (following overnight fasting).  This test is known as an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) and is one of the definitive test for diabetes.  Although it may not be necessary in diabetics whose random plasma glucose test was greater than or equal to 198 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l).

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes include:

1.  Fatigue occurs because your body"s cells aren"t receiving enough glucose, which is the fuel they need

2.  Frequent urination and thirst.  Your kidneys attempt to flush out the excessive amounts of sugar and this dehydrates your body and makes you feel thirsty

3.  Blurred vision.  As your blood sugar levels rise and fall your lenses swell and shrink.  Your sight blurs because your eyes cannot adjust quickly enough to these changes.

If you have any of these symptoms do not hesitate to contact your health care provider so he can order one or more of the above tests to determine if your blood sugar levels are within normal ranges, or to screen for type 2 diabetes.

Once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, blood glucose monitoring is the main tool you have to check your diabetes control.  By keeping a log you can tell your body"s response to your diet, exercise and medication plan.  Blood sugar levels show you what works and what doesn"t.
